Welcome and thank you! This blog is going to take you on a journey that will make you scratch your head in disbelief. I’m going to chronicle my medical care and also will be giving resources and information about my primary condition, autonomic neuropathy. Both are rare; the condition itself and the crazy events that have taken place. I also will discuss my multiple other conditions and how they play into learning to live the “new normal.”
In 2014, my life was turned upside down in a matter of days. I came home sick from work and never got to go back. Becoming a full time patient made me feel like I had lost my voice. I didn’t know how to cope. Nursing was all I knew. It runs in my blood and exists in every heartbeat. In 2016, I finally realized that something good has emerged from the shadows. The nurse in me still lives. Advocacy has become my passion. The healthcare system is so broken. If I can help even one person emerge stronger, make a connection or improve care for others going forward, then everything is worth it. The nurse lives on.
My nursing experience has included working in small, rural hospitals. All of them have been classified as “Critical Access” hospitals. All have been certified trauma centers. We stabilized the patients and then transferred them to a higher level of care.
I’ve worked Emergency Room, Intensive Care, Acute Care/Medical-Surgical-Pediatric, Labor/Delivery, Nursery, Pre and Post Operative Care Unit, Float Nurse, House Supervisor, as well as Home Health and Hospice. I also was the Nursing Team Leader for implementing an Electronic Health Record. The hospital was converting from paper to electronic. I continued in a consultant role after starting work at another hospital.
All of these areas of Nursing as well as experiences gained, have been life changing. Until you have heard the first and last breath of life and the first and last heart beats, you simply don’t know how precious life is. It’s hard to explain unless you have heard it for yourself. I miss it so much.
Nursing will always be my love, but I finally found a way to share it with you. Blogging and advocacy are my way to continue to make a difference everyday.
